The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) an entity that oversees the police complaints system in England and Wales and sets the standards by which the police should handle complaints. It is independent, making its decisions entirely independently of the police and government. The Independent Police Complaints Commission exists to investigate complaints fairly and thoroughly. The IPCC has the power to initiate, carry out and oversee investigations. It is also responsible for monitoring the way complaints are handled by local police forces.

Job Details:

Responsibilities of the Investigation Support Apprentice:

  • This apprenticeship forms an important part of the IPCC’s workforce development strategy as a way of helping to develop talent within the organisation. The aim is to provide an apprentice with the opportunity to learn new skills and gain sufficient knowledge of the work of the Investigation Support Team in order to then move on to another role within the IPCC.
  • On a day-to-day basis, they will act as a member of the Investigation Support Team within the Operations Directorate, providing administrative support to all operational staff locally and nationally as and when required.
  • Act as first point of contact to all callers for Investigations when appropriate, liaising with outside agencies and other parties whether by telephone, e-mail or post ensuring they are dealt with promptly, efficiently and courteously.
  • Provide administrative support with their individual responsibilities associated with such a position, this will include filing, scanning, photocopying and other general office duties.

Requirements of the Investigation Support Apprentice:

  • Attend and take minutes of meetings with the Lead Investigator and other key staff and ensure the minutes are circulated as soon as practicable.
  • Ensure Independent and Managed Investigations case files are kept up to date in accordance with guidance given.
  • Assist in the file preparation for Court, Inquests and Disciplinary Hearings as directed by the lead Investigator or the Investigation Support Manager.
  • Maintain and update the Sandman 2 database on TRIM and provide security for such documentation in compliance with IPCC policies in respect of storage, filing and archiving
  • Carry out the HOLMES typing service/proof reading.
  • Assist with research on the HOLMES system.
  • Assist the Operations Directorate with purchase requests, raise purchase orders using the online requisition system (in accordance with IPCC procurement processes) and liaising with Budget Holder reconciling invoices.
  • Fleet support duties including the organisation of internal pool car booking system. Ensure vehicles are available for MOT appointments and car services; whilst ensuring investigators needs are met.
  • Assist with the arrangement of meetings and other events, including the booking of video conference facilities and sending out invitations at the request of Investigators.
  • Book travel arrangements (including Hire Car bookings) and accommodation for Operational staff.
  • Manage the equipment booking system in respect of the portable audio equipment used in interviews.
