Business Apprentice Iona Murray, blogs her experience working for Microsoft.

During my time at Microsoft I have been given so many great opportunities to learn and build my confidence. I feel I have matured more in my six months here than in my five years at high school. While in an apprenticeship you are working with established individuals who can give you the best possible mentoring, while also being treated as a valuable member of the team.

There isn’t one thing I haven’t enjoyed about my apprenticeship at Microsoft as all of it has been a learning experience, however my favourite days have been exhibiting at events and demonstrating Microsoft products. It is very self-assuring to be trusted in a customer facing role.

QA was recommended to me by a teacher, and applying was relatively straightforward. QA were very supportive and responsive throughout the whole recruitment process, and provided me with constructive feedback on my interview skills.

QA allows you to start out in your career at a very young age, which will prove advantageous over those who go straight to university from school. It is no longer a necessity to have a degree when seeking a professional career.

I do believe that the economy is improving, and there are numerous routes into employment. If you are a young person who is struggling to get into employment due to lack of experience or qualifications you should definitely consider a modern apprenticeship.

I believe that my apprenticeship is not just a job, but the start of my career. Everyone in Microsoft wants to see me succeed which is very encouraging. I am gaining invaluable experience and only hope that my time at Microsoft won’t end.

This Scottish Apprenticeship Week, join Iona and hundreds of other Scottish apprentices who chose to do their IT Apprenticeships with QA.
